Research goals

The Animaré project is a young researcher fellowship financed by the French National Research Agency (ANR-08-JCJC-0078-01). Its main objective is to develop novel Expressive Rendering tools, both for 2D and 3D animation applications.
Expressive Rendering is a recent branch of Computer Graphics that offers promising novel styles, and is increasingly used in many application domains such as video games or movie production. At the present time, only expert artists are able to create compelling animations, and still, this is an extremely time-consuming process, with many constraints that strongly limit creativity. The reason is that current models are not sophisticated enough to provide intuitive manipulations and versatile styles. The motivation behind this project is to overcome these limitations both for 2D and 3D animation systems.
 

Research partners

The Animaré project is structured around two INRIA team-projects: IPARLA and ARTIS.
  • The main goal of the IPARLA project (joint project of LaBRI and INRIA Bordeaux - Sud-Ouest) is to favour the mobility of users dealing with visualization and interaction on 3D content. It focuses on the development of scalable techniques - from smartphones to virtual reality settings - in the scope of modelling, rendering and 3D user interfaces.
  • The objectives of the ARTIS project (joint project of LJK and INRIA Rhône-Alpes) combine the resolution of "classical", but difficult, issues in Computer Graphics, with the development of new approaches for emerging applications. A transverse objective is to develop a new approach to synthetic image creation that combines notions of geometry, appearance, style and priority.
 

Research Collaborations

Members of the Animare project have a number of informal collaborations with Computer Graphics companies:
  • OLM Digital R&D: OLM Digital is a Japanese company that is famous for producing Pokemon movies. Pascal Barla has been working on 2D animation and stylized shading projects with Ken-Ichi Anjyo and William Baxter from their research laboratory in the past three years.
  • Adobe ATL: Adobe’s Advanced Technology Labs create innovative technologies that can be incorporated into Adobe’s software products. Adrien Bousseau and Romain Vergne both worked at Adobe ATL during summer internships.
  • DL3D: David Lanier helped carying a project with ARTIS in the past and we are still discussing about potential practical collaborations.
